Right now, you may be considering making a career change. Why? There can be many reasons, maybe you don’t like the environment, you haven’t really connected with your colleagues or team, or simply because the work you do every day isn’t what you expected. Regardless of what your reason is, there will always be new opportunities ahead. But before you make such an important decision, you should evaluate your reasons for leaving, and consider the pros and cons. We hope to shed some light on the subject and help you self-assess, in order to determine whether it really is time for a change.
Indicators that you’re not quite ready to switch jobs yet:
- Your resume is outdated
Let’s start with the basics. Is your resume up to date? If the answer is no, then you know that it needs to be edited immediately before making any other moves. Take the time to look it over and ask someone else to review it and give you feedback on how you can improve it.
- You feel pressured when having to learn new skills
The only thing that’s constant is change, and this applies to industries and jobs as well. You will always be learning new skills, no matter where you go, because the world, as we know it, is quickly evolving, making it impossible for us to know everything. In any job, you will need patience in order to learn new tools and develop abilities that will help you succeed in your industry. Don’t think that you’re a failure just because you don’t know everything from the beginning. Learning and improving takes time and, therefore, you shouldn’t quit a job just because you feel pressured in that sense. This will happen in any job that you take on.
- You’re unsure of what you want
Do you really know who you are and what you like? What’s your passion? That something that you could get up and do every single day with a smile on your face… If you have not yet decided, then you should rethink quitting your current job. It’s possible that you may be confused and need to talk it over with someone you trust. Maybe a friend or a family member could offer you a different perspective that allows you to see more clearly. There are also career counselors that can give you a hand during this self-discovery process. Picture this: you apply for another job, you receive an offer, and you end up rejecting it because you’re not sure if you want to take the leap. Avoid getting to this point and instead focus on getting to know yourself first.
- You don’t have any other income or back-up savings plan
Maybe you feel that the time to quit is approaching, but before you can do that, you have to make sure that your finances are in order. If you don’t have a plan B yet, in terms of another stable income, analyze your options. It may be a good idea to stay a bit longer, even if it’s not your ideal job, so you can have time to get another one or even save more money.
- There’s no better offer on the table yet
If you think that you’re working environment is too much to handle, and that you need to leave as soon as possible for a specific reason, there’s no one that knows you better than yourself. But if it’s not an urgent situation, we recommend that you focus on getting an offer at another company first, so that you have something to do once you quit. Maybe you consider that your job is “normal” and stable, but it’s not necessarily your passion. You feel stuck. If this is the case, don’t immediately change jobs, think it thoroughly first, because not everyone gets their dream job right off the bat. Sometimes it takes time and more experience until you can succeed and be where you want to be.
After reading these tips, analyze your situation and evaluate your options, then you should be able to make a decision that’s right for you. Remember that, at the end of the day, only you know what’s best in your case, and you are the master of your own destiny. If you’re not happy at your current job, it’s important to know that everything has a solution. It’s just a matter of paying attention to the signals and organizing yourself to make responsible decisions. Success is in your hands!
